The major challenge in my work is in creating a painting that evolves out of the subconscious. There is no preconceived idea or plan.

The space comes alive through the colors and shapes that are in some cases collaged onto a surface of canvas or board. Spontaneity and movement are important as new images appear. Some of the pictorial spaces become busy and congested while others are more vast and serene.

Once the elements are in place, consciousness takes over and chance becomes purpose. A feeling comes forth and I follow the colors and shapes adding or wiping away the parts to complete the process and the painting.

These paintings are unified by the materials and the process. Placing different colors next to each other presents a new direction and movement in the painting. I see something different- a new path or a deeper space. The completed vision portrays a sensitivity and fragility along with a strong visual image. Although the image is abstract, the feeling is solidified.

Each painting has its individual purpose. Lively colors and shapes reflect a happy rabbit's party; calmer colors and a feeling suggest it's a fine or leisurely day, a proud blue horse comes through with another. Forms circling and swimming help us feel the fish bowl; a diver appears under an imaginative sea or a landscape of volcanic ash becomes serene. Many forms separate or transform from other shapes. Although I perceive my own image as the painting emerges, I also want the viewer to create his own experience from the materials I have presented.

My goal is to continue this process through further exploration of color and different materials to create new journeys.
